The Pledge

As an approved member of the TriCounty Force-Free Alliance, I affirm my commitment to maintaining the highest standards of humane, science-based, and force-free care for companion animals. I pledge that I, along with any employees or volunteers under my direction, am educated in—and will continue to pursue ongoing education in—the most current, evidence-based, force-free training and handling methodologies.

I will not intentionally cause harm, fear, or intimidation to any animal in my care. Prohibited training and handling practices include, but are not limited to: alpha rolling, pinning, yelling, poking, scruffing, leash corrections or jerks, flooding, or the use or promotion of dominance-based training or handling methods. I acknowledge that aversive training and handling tools and equipment—such as choke chains, prong collars, electronic collars (e-collars), electric fences, ultrasonic deterrents, and similar devices—are not acceptable, consistent with the position statements of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. I further agree not to promote or refer clients to individuals or businesses that utilize dominance-based or aversive training or handling methods.

By joining the Alliance, I expressly agree to the following:

  • I will provide care and guidance to animals using only force-free, fear-free, pain-free, and humane training and handling methods.

  • I will not use, sell, or endorse aversive training or handling tools or the professionals who employ such tools. This includes, but is not limited to: shock collars, e-collars, prong collars, choke collars, slip leads used as training devices, scat mats, ultrasonic devices, citronella collars or sprays, noise-based startle devices, or any tool designed to intimidate, frighten, or cause discomfort. In an emergency situation (e.g., a dog fight) tools that startle or interrupt behavior may be utilized, but should never be used in place of humane training, handling, and management.

  • I will make a good-faith effort to support and collaborate with local animal care businesses that uphold humane and ethical standards in both practice and product offerings.

  • I will provide proof of certification or credentials upon request.

By adhering to this pledge, I commit to advancing the mission of the TriCounty Force-Free Alliance and to promoting a culture of compassion, welfare, and evidence-based care throughout the pet-care community.
